Tell me about iKamin?
*iKamin is a free mobile app. It is developed bearing in mind the issue with address systems in developing countries where locating a place is often exhaustive. It uses GPS signals to work. In generating your KaminCode, you do not need to be connected to internet as iKamin works offline. However to see your location or get direction to the destination, you do need internet.
How accurate is iKamin app?
*iKamin uses your phone GPS to work. Do ensure you turn on the High accuracy in your Phone’s GPS location service. High Accuracy is an assisted GPS which uses GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or cellular networks to determine your location. It is strongly advised that when generating your KaminCode, you maintain clear view of the horizon in several directions. To understand this more, please read on.
iKamin sometimes delays or fails or generates a Code that is far from my location when viewed on the map. Why?
*Line of sight between the receiver and the satellite is recommended when working with GPS. When this is not possible, accuracy suffers due to reflections and weakening of signals. If your experience failure, one of this could be responsible:
*Your phone’s GPS receiver design features/quality
*The position of the satellites at the time the recording was made
*The characteristics of the surrounding landscape; thick forests, underground/indoor use or signal jammed sites can make GPS signals unconditionally weak or not being able to be received.
*Signals reflected off buildings or walls or bridges (“multipath”)
*Radio interference or jamming
*On rare occassions, magnetic fields generated by the sun causing solar flares, or emission of intense radio waves from a star (radio burst) may result in reduced GPS signal reception.
Do Weather conditions affect GPS accuracy?
*Some atmospheric conditions like rain or snow can weaken the GPS signal but they generally do not affect GPS reception. Ideally, rains do not affect GPS reception, but heavy clouds, eventual thick fogs or snow could be a hindrance for the signals to reach GPS receiver, leading to weak GPS signal. This is same for TV signals going off on a heavily clouded day with thunderstorms.
*Some have proposed that it is also possible that when battery operated GPS devices are cold, due to weather conditions, they will emit less power resulting in signal degradation.
How can I improve my location accuracy?
*When generating your KaminCode, maintain a clear view of the horizon in several directions
*Verify that you have a cellular or Wi-Fi network connection. This allows the Assisted GPS (A-GPS) on the device to locate visible GPS satellites faster, in addition to providing initial location information using the Wi-Fi or cellular networks.
*Ensure the date, time, and time zone are correctly set on your device
*Restart your device!
How about SECURITY?
*iKamin values your security so does not keep a remote database of people’s KaminCodes. Your KaminCodes are your digital address, you decide who you share it with!
